The Gordon Mustoe Chopping Board - Farming

Gordon Mustoe

Residing in North Canterbury, Gordon's journey into woodworking began as a young lad, doing his apprenticeship with Naylor Love in 1970 at only 15 years old! He remained the industry for the next 50+ years, before retiring at 65, but for Gordon, the love and passion for woodwork didn’t end there.
He was always crafting something up in the shed and no challenge was too big or too small.

Inside his workshop, each piece of timber is carefully selected for its grain and texture. Gordon's process is meticulous; he insists on hand-selecting every board, ensuring only the finest materials make the cut. With practiced hands and a discerning eye, he transforms raw planks into works of functional art.

Despite his age (70), Gordon shows no signs of slowing down. His days begin with the first light, a steaming cup of coffee in hand, and end with the setting sun casting long shadows across his workshop floor. For Gordon, retirement is not an option; each new board presents a fresh challenge and added pocket money on top of his pension.

Gordon recycles timber from all over Canterbury, with the walnut in these boards, from a 100+ year old felled tree in the Mackenzie Country, and Rimu, from the old Geraldine High School which saw a major renovation in the late 2000s. Gordon was involved in these renovations for almost 10 years and never threw a good stick of timber away. Every bit of timber carries its own history.

In a fast-paced world where disposable goods dominate, Gordon's commitment to craftsmanship stands as a beacon of tradition and excellence. With each board that leaves his workshop, Gordon's legacy grows, a testament to the enduring allure of handcrafted artistry. As long as there are trees to fell and hands to carve, Gordon will continue to shape the world, one chopping board at a time.
